Overview

The virtual Epilepsy Awareness & Emergency Medication Course will explore what epilepsy is, as well as different seizure types and first aid protocols. There will be an opportunity to answer questions. A competency assessment will be required to be completed and then given to employers for their records.

Practical Competency can be delivered at a later date either at the training centre or within the workplace following Government advice on Social Distancing.

Course Contents

  • What is epilepsy?
  • The effects epilepsy has on the body
  • Awareness of different types of seizures
  • How to support a person during a epileptic seizure
  • Awareness of epileptic medication
  • Understanding Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) therapy
  • Other treatments available e.g. surgery, ketogenic diet
  • How to recognise an epileptic emergency and how to deal with it appropriately including when to call the emergency services
  • Understanding and demonstrating the correct use of emergency medication (buccal midazolam, epistatus) as per JEC guidelines (Joint Epilepsy Council)
